Abstract

.1) The clinical features in 20 cases of snakebite seen in the General Hospital, Wukari, are presented and discussed. There were three deaths, one from haematuria, one from circulatory collapse, and the other from ascending paralysis with respiratory failure.

.2) The major problems in viperine bites are haematuria and circulatory collapse.

.3) Antivenin treatment is of prime importance, and each country should prepare polyvalent or specific antivenin for the snakes in its own area.

.4) The factors of importance in antivenin treatment are discussed.
